Harper College’s Genuine Approach

In the unstable economy we are facing, careers and jobs are being eliminated, and many people are left searching for alternative solutions for jobs. After extensive research about a career as a Medical Assistant, I just knew it was the perfect field for me to enter. I knew I’d always wanted to help people, and as an MA, it is the perfect opportunity.

The number one thing I researched was the best school to go to for the MA program. Living in the suburbs of Chicago, I just knew my best option was attending William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, IL. I have taken classes previously at Harper College and really enjoyed not only the courses taught here, but the professors who clearly love what they are doing.

When I became interested in the MA program at Harper College, I initially contacted the program director, Geri Kale-Smith, who was excellent with getting back to me and answering all of my questions. After registering for and taking the necessary courses about one year ago, I am on my way to doing my externship in March of 2013 through the school.

I have learned a great deal from taking all the courses for the program. Even though they have been difficult, I really got a great understanding not only of the field itself but also of what my day-to-day life could potentially look like. My favorite thing about the Harper College MA program is that all the professors are there to help you out with anything you need.

Downside:

The only downside I find is the extensive health requirements we are required to complete before starting the externship. Although it may seem like a lot, I understand the necessity of it all.

Upside:

One big plus about the Harper College MA program is that the college matches each student with an externship site, or you have the freedom to choose a site you would prefer to go to as long as you get the proper documentation filled out. Also, the program is flexible and designed to be completed around each student’s schedule, which is fantastic because I need to continue to work while taking my classes.

I am so glad I’ve taken this path in my life & career, and I know this is the perfect school for me for all the reasons I’ve listed and then some. If a student is interested in a career in medical assistance, it is very important to research a school where the instructors are there to help the students grow and learn, not just for a paycheck. If the school has all the right components it makes completing the tough program more rewarding.
